Hospitality and Leisure

Enhancing guest experiences with playful spaces
For hospitality and leisure businesses, a playground is more than just play equipment; it’s an extension of the visitor experience. Play can often be overlooked whilst looking at the visitor experience, but there's solid evidence that providing engaging and amazing play areas increase visitor retention and can also increase visitor spend.
Massey and Harris’ approach for these clients is to create engaging, safe, and visually appealing playgrounds that enhance the overall ambiance of your venue. We're masters at creating bespoke play areas that will fit into your theme and create a commercially successful business.
Imperial War Museum, Duxford
The Weston Play Zone at IWM Duxford features a standout Playful Plane, alongside rope play, parachute shelters, and a sweeping vapour trail walkway, bringing aviation-inspired, inclusive play to life.

Planning
The first stage will be to understand the scope of the project and to sketch out initial ideas. If the area requires particular theming or style we'd look at how we could incorporate this in the initial designs. We'd look at how the play elements interact with each other and how they would generate a strong returning customer base and how the play area would contribute to the long term commercial benefit of the business.
It would be at this stage that customer engagement into the play provision should be looked at so that the design and proposal will generate high satisfaction and word of mouth recommendations. This bolsters a venue's reputation and can foster ongoing growth. We can also help generate supporting documentation that outlines the cost benefit of having play provision to help stakeholder engagement and relevant parties.

Design
We'll start by putting pen to paper and coming up with initial concepts and ideas that work within the brief outlined in the Planning phase. We will iterate and layout these initial ideas and concepts and provide supporting notes to show how we've arrived at the ideas proposed. The next stage within the Design Development phase will be to build on the selected concept and to start adding play activities and baking in play value into the design. Where we work on Bespoke Designs, this stage is critical so that the play area allows for high levels of dwell time and attracts new visitors. Through the design phase, we look at generating positive interactions within the play area that will in turn foster positive customer experiences which in turn allow for return visits. A simple play area can help with providing play, but a truly stand out play area will set you apart and this is why the Design stage is so critical.

Manufacture
After design sign off, we'll pass our designs over to our technical designers. At Massey and Harris, we offer a total start to finish process from concept design through to manufacture through to installation. It all happens under one roof, from our workshop in Stockport, Greater Manchester. There's numerous benefits to this approach. The design office will liaise directly with the fabricators in the workshop providing clear communication, limiting mistakes to the production process and making it easier to correct or modify elements during the manufacturing phase.
Our manufacturing timescales vary depending on size and also time of year, but most projects take around 3 months to go through our workshop.
Before the play equipment leaves our workshop, we have a three stage quality assurance process to ensure that the equipment conforms to 1176 and that all the manufacturing steps have been completed to the highest of standards.

Delivery and Installation
Making sure that the playground gets to site safely and smoothly is a big priority for us. We partner with a wide range of delivery partners that handle our logistics. We have a dedicated haluage contractor who we've worked with for over 10 years. They're the experts in getting things from A to B and they'll make sure that all of the playground elements are shipped in the right way.
When required, we'll also ship the components in kit form and then reassemble them on site.
Once everything arrives on site, our team will then help with the installation element. We'll work with on site contractors to make sure that everything is planned out perfectly before and during the build. We'll discuss all of the details with you, so that you'll know what to expect on site.
