Piccadilly Gardens

Challenge

Manchester City Council wanted a new playground in the heart of the City Centre.

The play area was to be located in Piccadilly Gardens and required various pieces of play equipment to give the children different ways of exploring and playing whilst also providing a wide range of challenges.

The play area was compact with significant services under the site posing a number of installation issues as well as the expectation of an extremely high pedestrian footfall in the area.

Solution

Massey and Harris designed a bespoke play area with bespoke pieces of equipment featuring none other than ‘Dilly the Snail’.

‘Dilly’ is perfect for younger visitors but, at 1.6m, is large and exciting enough for older children too.

Other pieces of bespoke play equipment completed the scheme including reed spinners, balance rails and tulip spinners.

Result

Manchester City Council now have a robust and challenging play area that allows children of all ages to engage in play.

This city centre playground has been well received and looks as contemporary today as it did when first installed.
