Outdoor multi-purpose Play Facility
Crab Lane had a large, partly shaded area of land for outdoor play, which was often flooded after wet weather. The school wanted an area which could be used safely in all weathers, required minimum maintenance and created a number of different play spaces with textures, surfacing, sounds and safety all important factors.
- Ground levels were adjusted to allow water to run off the play area and new drains were installed for additional drainage.
- The changes in levels were made more interesting through the use of a Storyteller’s seat, circular seating area, raised and bordered planting areas with a loose fill natural surfacing.
- The planting area provided an ideal opportunity to get the children involved in the creation of their play space, bringing in parents and Hulme Community Garden Centre for an educational planting afternoon.
- Along with transforming the steep open section into an educational garden, pathways between them enable the children to enjoy their bicycles safely.
- A grass area with safagrass matting was created allowing year round use of the mushroom seats and musical play panels.
- A 7m x 7m TIPO canopy near to the nursery door allows outdoor play whatever the weather, and installed crash pads ensures that children can run around with no risk of injury from the metal legs.
- A large rubber wet-pour area was created to link together the canopy area and the existing multi-play unit that was re-sited within the new play space as part of the scheme.
- All year round multi purpose play area enchanced by new drainage.
- Safe and secure seating and play areas.
- Interactive play features.
- Social intercation within the StoryTeller area.
- Increased safe play area
- Relocated existing climbing frame

No more Welly Weather ...This provision gives our children the best educational start by encouraging play in a stimulating environment. We are delighted with how the staff and children use this valuable space.
